About
Tenor Eric Riedel, described by the National Opera Association as possessing a “lovely timbre and obvious commitment,” is quickly establishing himself as an emerging vocal artist. Recent appearances include concerts with the Young Professionals Choral Collective, Xavier University Choirs, and the Seven Hills Symphony as the tenor soloist in Mozart’s Requiem, with the Kentucky Bach Choir as a soloist in BWV 61 “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland”, and with Seven Hills Baroque as part of the 2026 Cincinnati Early Music Festival. In the summer of 2026, Riedel will return to Cincinnati Opera to perform in the chorus of Bizet’s Carmen, and will also embark on a residency at Worcester Cathedral in the United Kingdom alongside the Christ Church Cathedral Choir.
Fall of 2025 brought several exciting projects as Eric performed as the tenor soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with the CCM Concert Orchestra under the baton of Joe Miller. That November, Eric returned to Cincinnati Opera for its Opera Fusion: New Works initiative, appearing in Gregory Spears’s Sleepers, Awake. Riedel’s affinity for contemporary American opera was highlighted by his portrayal of Paul in Gregory Spears’s Paul’s Case with Miami University Opera Theater—a production that earned First Place in the National Opera Association’s Opera Production Competition. The performance marked the first and only collegiate production of the work to date and showcased Riedel in a role noted for its formidable musical and dramatic demands. Additional credits with Miami University Opera Theater include Monsieur Vogelsang in Mozart’s The Impresario, Fabrizio Nacarelli in Adam Guettel’s The Light in the Piazza, and Neos in the world premiere of John Massaro’s The Seven Sisters.
Also during the 2024–25 season, Eric sang the role of Snout in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream on the mainstage at CCM, and the roles of Tito in La clemenza di Tito and both Arbace and Idomeneo in Idomeneo in the CCM Graduate Opera Showcase of scenes. Riedel was chosen for the professional chorus of Cincinnati Opera’s Rigoletto in the summer of 2025. In 2024, Riedel was invited by the Marilyn Horne Foundation to perform Duparc’s “Phidylé” in a master class celebrating the legendary mezzo-soprano’s 90th birthday at the Marilyn Horne Museum in Bradford, Pennsylvania. He later appeared as the Sandman in a concert version of Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel with the CCM Philharmonia conducted by Mark Gibson. Other concert performances have included the titular role of Matt in Craig Hella Johnson’s oratorio Considering Matthew Shepard, and tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Cantata No. 182, and Handel’s L’Allegro, il Penseroso, ed il Moderato with the Miami University Orchestra and chorus.
Riedel is also establishing himself firmly in the choral sphere, particularly as a core member of Vocal Arts Ensemble Cincinnati under the direction of Joe Miller. His tenure as a member of the ensemble has been highlighted by a widely celebrated performance in the famous “Duo seraphim” trio from Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine for three tenors on VAE’s “An Italian Christmas” concert in December 2025. This spring, Riedel and VAE will perform Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle as part of the Cincinnati May Festival. Other choral engagements include performances with Coro Volante, Collegium Cincinnati, and Ensemble O2.
Riedel has earned recognition in numerous voice competitions, winning four consecutive First Place awards in the Ohio NATS Competitions and two consecutive First Place awards at the Great Lakes Regional NATS Competition, where he received the Jon Vickers Award for Best Overall Performance. Eric was a winner of Miami University’s Undergraduate Artist Competition, and in their Concerto Competition for which he performed arias of Handel, Mozart, and Donizetti with the Miami University Symphony Orchestra.
An alumnus of the AIMS Lieder Program in Graz, Austria, Riedel studied songs of Wolf, Schubert, and Schoenberg with Gabriel Dobner, performing in lieder recitals, Spanish gala concerts, and in a master class with renowned baritone Bo Skovhus. Riedel earned his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Miami University, where he studied with Alison Acord, and will complete his Master of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Cincinnati College–Conservatory of Music (CCM) in 2026 under Daniel Weeks.
